The Best Way to Sell Your Silver

By Diamond Jim

You've heard about selling your gold but what about selling your silver?  Isn't silver valuable too?  Of course it is!  Because of its immense value, gold has been used for centuries around the world as "money" to make large purchases. However, for smaller purchases silver has also been used as "money" because it too is very valuable. Silver, while rare, is much more plentiful than gold.

Today we are looking at your silver.  The first question is, what do you have of value?  It could be an old silver tea service or sterling silver flatware.  It could be a silver baby rattle or silver platter or silver cup.  You could have grandpa's silver coin collection or dad's old football trophy.  You may have religious medals made of silver (or gold) or even an old pocket watch made of silver.  Remember the flute and trumpet the kids were going to learn to play?  Many of these things were commonly made of silver.  If you are no longer using these things, you might want to turn them into something you will use - cash!

As an example, a complete tea service in sterling silver can be worth as much as $2000.  That could go a long way for you.  A full or even partial set of sterling silverware can be up to $900.  That silver candelabra or those silver candlesticks could be hundreds of dollars as well.  It is obvious how quickly your unused items can add up to real money.

So, you ask, how should I go about selling my silver?

First, make a note of the list at the end of this article to see all the items that could possibly be silver in your home.  Then take the list and go through your house room by room and collect each silver item you no longer want or are curious about the value of.  Put the items in boxes or strong bags as you will find these items to be heavy.  You sure don't want a bag to break and spill everything on the floor!

Choose a reputable shop and bring your items to.  This can be the hardest part - finding someone you trust to evaluate your silver.  Beware of all the quick money places that just started up in business trying to make money off the gold craze.  You will not get a good price for your silver if you choose a place like this.  A good rule is don't go there if precious metals is their secondary business.  In other words, a company that deals in gold and silver won't wash your car or sell you tobacco or liquor: you can't get a tatoo, a massage or a cell phone, and a reputable store WON'T give you a haircut.  These are just a few of the places we've seen offering to buy gold and silver!  Please do yourself a favor and trust a jeweler/metals dealer only!

Once you bring your silver items in, the specialist will determine what is silver and what is something else.  Then he (or she) will test each of your silver pieces to find out just how much silver is in each item.  He will calculate the value of your items based on the current price of silver and pay you your money.  It is just that simple.  Now take a deep breath and use the money for whatever you want!
